When you’re renovating your bathroom, chances are you’ll want to make it as modern and contemporary as possible. But what exactly is a modern contemporary bathroom? In this article I hope to talk you through the elements involved in designing your bathroom to look as up to date as possible.
The one aspect of bathroom design that effects all the others is the choice of colours, if you pick black tiles for example, you probably wont want to fit a brown carpet. The first thing you’ll want to do is go into a DIY store (if not check on the internet) and look at some colour swabs, to see which colour schemes look good to you. If your bathroom has a lot of natural light, you can get away with choosing a dark colour scheme, but if you only have a small window (or no window at all), it’s important to pick a light scheme, to avoid your bathroom looking dull and murky.
Once you’ve chosen the colours, its a good idea to make some other decorating choices. Will you be using tiles, wallpaper, or just painting the walls? Will you be carpeting the floor, using tiles, laminate or exposed floorboards? Although it’s a traditional building material, wood effect on the floors can work very well with modern designs, although I’d recommend laminate over real wood, as even when treated wood is vulnerable to water damage over time. Carpet is warm and comfortable, and can look good with modern designs, but you might want to consider the hygiene implications before picking one out.
Now when you select your bathroom suite, you’ll know precisely what the room around it will look like, which makes it much easier to select something complimentary. Designers are bringing out more and more beautiful basins and baths every day, but before you settle on anything, be sure that its function meets your needs!
Next up are the fixtures and fittings. It’s important that whether you have a shower, bath or all three, it is important that you get the same material of taps if not the same style. Chrome is usually the best choice if you’re going for a modern look, but gold looks good in most situations. In my opinion, brass usually looks better in period bathrooms.
When you’re selecting a shower, consider using a rain shower head. These are typically larger than traditional shower heads, and given their environmental and health benefits, they go very well with contemporary bathrooms. They are also available in hand held models, so if you only have a shower head to wash your hair, it’s still a good choice.
Once the installation is complete, you’ll want to get accessories that match. Glass mirror cabinets are an excellent choice of vanity in modern bathrooms, as they are functional and beautiful at the same time. Be sure to choose bins and toilet brushes that match either the decoration or your fixtures and fittings, to make sure the finishing touches are just right.

Selecting a Contemporary Shower Curtain and Other Bathroom Accessories
The perfect contemporary shower curtain can enhance your bathroom décor immediately. One of the first that a person notices when entering the bathroom is the shower curtain. When decorating a bathroom in contemporary décor, either a plastic curtain or fabric curtain can be used. However, before we get too ahead of ourselves, let’s carefully plan our bathroom design.
Solid Color Curtains vs. Patterned Curtains
One of the first decisions in bathroom design is the color scheme. Are we going for a black and white bathroom, green and brown or red and blue? Before a curtain or any other bathroom accessories can be selected, a color scheme must be decided upon. Modern and contemporary style décor is known for being simple and clean cut. Some of the more popular colors for decorating in this style are black, grey, and white. Often these colors are accented with a bold color such as red, blue or yellow.
Although color is an option, many contemporary curtains are made in abstract patterns. Curtains made in this style often feature bold, bright colors. If a bold patterned curtain is selected, it is important that the walls and other bathroom décor are neutral. Using too many bold colors in the bathroom can ruin the modern look and feel.
Are all shower curtains one size?
Most curtains are made in the same standard size of 70 inches wide and 70 inches high. As far as how low the curtain hangs, that is on a case by case basis. Ideally, curtain rods should hang 78 1/2 inches above the floor. However, the curtain rod can be placed however the owner desires. If you are going for a certain look or have restrictions that prevent you from placing at that level, there are longer shower curtains available.
Contemporary Bathroom Décor: Hooks or Rings?
Once a shower curtain has been selected, the next decision is whether to used shower hooks or shower rings. Contemporary décor does not cater to either option as they are both available in an assortment of styles. However, when selecting hooks or rings, make sure they compliment your selected contemporary shower curtain.
Selecting bathroom accessories can be fun or challenging. Your experience and results will be much better if you sit down and plan your bathroom design carefully. Start your new bathroom makeover or upgrade by installing a new contemporary shower curtain.

Have you just finished building your dream home? Are you still looking through the storage space options for your bathroom? Aesthetics and functions are ensured with contemporary bathroom vanities. Vanities are placed into the bathroom via counter tops or wall mounts.
Choosing the best contemporary bathroom vanities is a matter of knowing what fits the overall design. Minimalist homes work best with modern styled vanities. Modern houses are marked by smooth lines and metal based colors. A minimalist house does not exaggerate or crowd the area with furniture. The clean lines and open space are what make contemporary vanities match minimalist houses. The design fools the eyes into thinking the space is larger than it actually is.
Modern bathroom cabinets are classified in three categories. The least space is occupied by rolling storage cabinets. These cabinets can be placed under the sink or to the side. The storage is space is still large enough to place toiletries, cleaning appliances, and the like.
Contemporary bathroom cabinets also come in the form of wall hung storage spaces, and counter toppers. The topper is placed on a counter, saving enough space for the rest of the bathroom. The depth of the counter topper measures 15 inches. This measurement provides enough storage for medicines, toiletries, and the like. Other counter top cabinets can be adjusted to fit the bathroom’ overall size.
Wall hung bathroom storage can also save more bathroom space. Its below the counter location enables the bathroom with more space out of all the contemporary bathroom vanities. The cabinet is placed beneath the wall counter or at one side. The cabinet size measures from 18 to 20 square inches. Two wall hung cabinets can be placed in large sized bathrooms.
Contemporary bathroom vanities are a suitable inclusion to a newly built home. Each of these cabinet choices utilize the space without crowding the bathroom. Combine form and function with the cabinet used.
Contemporary bathroom vanities are useful furniture pieces for any type of home. They work best with minimalist and modern designed houses. Contemporary bathroom cabinets are available as wall hung storage items, counter toppers, and rolling storage cabinets. Small sized bathrooms can expand room space by using rolling storage cabinets. Modern bathroom cabinets such as wall hung storage and counter toppers provide more floor area in the bathroom.

I posted this yesterday but didn’t get very many replies, so I’m trying again.
It’s going to be quite a while yet, but I’m doing some preliminary planning to eventually build our own house. Hubby’s not being very helpful in all this, so I want to show him actual examples of what I’m talking about so I can get his opinion.
Sooo… right now I’m focusing on the master bathroom.
I want the master bath to be a spa type of area.
When you enter, the first thing you’ll notice is the wonderful tub at the other end of the room. When you walk in, on either side should be a sink. I’m one of those people who likes sleek, simple, and modern. Very contemporary. I have just fallen in love with vessel sinks.
Here’s the problem, everything I’ve seen has either the sink suspended somehow with no storage whatsoever below it or on the tiniest of vanities. All the ones that have more space, have two sinks on them.
I don’t want a sink with barely enough room on the vanity to place things like my hairbrush on, and I most definitely don’t want one that I can’t place anything on. There needs to be things like drawers for storage.
The only thing I can think of is to have it all custom made. And that means running up the price.
I’ve spent two weeks trying to find examples of what I’m looking for and can’t find it anywhere.
Suggestions?
Oh, and if it helps, I want for the toilet to be in its own private room, the shower to have two shower heads without a door, a built in massage table (I’m quite good at it, but find it very frustrating to have to use a bed or the floor. I haven’t been officially trained, but I do know how and have been told many times that I should get my license. I just don’t want to do it for a living), and a door opening into a private garden area. I’d also love to have a heated floor and towel warmers, though I think since the room is already going to be very expensive, those two will be out.
I’m not much for "ornate". I want a modern bathroom and "ornate" is much more than I’d like.

Thanks pissy. I really like the first countertop/sinks with the seconds vanity/drawers.

We have a tile picked out for our entire downstairs- including kitchen, bathroom, living and family room (except 1 bedroom which is wood) and the master bathroom upstairs, but my daughters don’t think that the tile will match with what they want to be a contemporary bathroom. Is it okay that one bathroom in the house is a different tile?
And how about cabinets? Is it all right that the kitchen has one color cabinets (say a coffee color) and the bathrooms are all a darker color?
Thank you!

…furniture and tastes. How do I make my apt. more modern and sleek and streamlined without changing hardware?
I really love the modern/contemporary/sleek look. Think track lighting, geometric couches and chairs, straight lines, simple curves, silver, solid colors, minimal color. My furniture reflects that look. Think black, geometric, glass, brushed metal silver.
But the problem is I’m moving into an old, old, old apt whose fixtures can’t be changed or replaced–management would not allow that–nor do I have the budget to replace them myself even if I wanted to temporarily during my lease. The ceiling lighting is quite old in style, the faucets are turn knobs from decades ago, the cupboards have a regular non-gloss generic wood trim, the bathroom and kitchen floors are tiled with a non-modern look, not to mention the overall structure of the closet doors, counters, etc.
What are detailed suggestions of how I can reconcile the old look of my apt. with my very modern furniture? I really yearn for a modern, tranquil, minimalist, sleek , clean look…whites, blacks, silvers, neutrals, maybe a splash of color here and there but not a lot.
By the way, I’m a guy who’s young and recently out of grad school, in case that helps. I like a modern masculine/neutral look, for example, neutral-colored bamboo sticks instead of flowers.
